The Story..............

...begins in the office of the rapidly failing secondhand car yard of Bugrall Motors - Home of Bargain Cars that Drive Your Dollar Further.

Into this crumbling enterprise comes Sally Divine seeking employment. At the interview she was led to believe that she was being engaged as a telephone receptionist, a position which she won over several other applicants by virtue of her superior qualifications - she was younger and she wore a shorter skirt.

However, during the months she has been there, she has come to realise that she is also book-keeper, salesperson, car detailer, confidente and professional liar on behalf of Bob Bugrall, who is increasingly absent from the car yard.

Business is not brisk at the car yard - which is a boon to Sally because it leaves her free to engage in her favourite pursuit - day-dreaming. She fantasises about being a glamorous night club singer in the 1930's, which she has read all about in the novels of Raymond Chandler.

This morning, as she arrives for work, the telephone is ringing..........
