Synopsis
Act 1

As Sally reluctantly enters the office of the car yard where she works, the telephone is ringing. Determined not to start a moment too soon, Sally counts down the minutes to eight thirty before answering.

Her first caller is yet another dissatisfied customer whom she tries to placate by promising to pass on his complaints to the boss. Since her boss, Bob Bugrall, is rarely at the office these days, this might be easier said than done.

As she answers a stream of irritated callers, she slips into her favourite daydream - imagining what it would have been like to be a glamorous night club singer in the Swing Era of the Nineteen Thirties/Forties.

Starring Sally Divine
Tracy Ollington in the title role as Sally Divine.

Starring Sally Divine is a one-woman play with music.
She acts out her fantasy and takes us with her into the smoky world of her dreams where she performs to an adoring crowd of fans. The dream is short lived as the incessant ringing of the telephone shatters her make believe and drags her back to the present aggravation of the car yard.

It is obvious that things are not as they should be when her boss rings up and asks her to lie about his whereabouts, and a young lady named Fifi La Marr calls looking for him.

As if these were not enough problems for Sally, she tries to gently explain to her doting and absent minded Mother why she does not want to live at home anymore.

Slipping back into her dream she performs more of her favourite songs in the nightclub which becomes so real to her that she imagines a police raid.
Act 2

We see that a real police raid has actually just taken place in the car yard. Following a number of complaints the police are investigating Bob Bugrall's business and have removed files and paperwork for examination. Sally realises that things are worse than she thought and that she might be implicated.

Her patience is stretched when ex boy friend Steve pesters her to re start their relationship and her Mother calls again.

She decides to clear up the office and is horrified to find evidence that her corrupt boss has fled the country and left his wife at the mercy of creditors.

The tension builds as she struggles to unravel some of the mess involving landlords, insurance companies and car wholesalers.

On top of all this she receives a call from an investigative television program seeking to expose the frauds associated with Bob Bugrall .

She is about to dismiss the caller when she suddenly realises that here is her chance to really enter the world that she loves so much - the world of entertainment. She spins an elaborate story and arranges to meet the television crew later that evening to film her performance.

She changes into a glamorous gown and rehearses the show.

Maybe she has escaped her humdrum existence and is on the road to fame at last.
