Sally Divine is a telephone receptionist in a rapidly failing car yard. Sally has to deal with an increasingly hostile stream of callers - from irate customers who have been sold a lemon - to insurance assessors who suspect that her boss, Bob Bugrall, has been fiddling the books. She also has to juggle the calls from Bob Bugrall's girl friend and his wife, while trying not to take sides. |
But in between phone calls Sally daydreams. Her head is filled with the sounds and images of the nineteen thirties night club scene. She imagines herself in the role of a glamorous cabaret singer and we follow her into the smoky world of the speakeasy, jazz and prohibition |
